Bengal fur patterns
It might be interesting for some to see how a bengal kittens fur texture changes in the first weeks.
When growing up a bengal kittens fur goes through some changes, and it takes a serious and experienced breeder to be able to see a close indication of the exact fur colour before the kitten is a couple of months old, if not longer!
At about 6 weeks of age a bengal kitten begins what is referred to as a “fuzzy stage”. The fur becomes more grey in color and looses a bit of its clear contrast. The fur “clears” again after 4-5 months, but the true colour of a bengal is, in my experience, first obvious at around 8 months. For some bengals it can take even longer, uo to 1 year.
The “fuzzy stage” is something that kan be observed amongst wild cats. The evolutionary explanation to this is, so the kittens are able to hide from predators. Kittens of the Asian leopard cat are born in a tree or rock cavity and stay there until around 1 month old and even though spots in some places can be a great comouflage, when hiding in a den a very clear spotted coat would stand out and therefore have a poor function of camouflage.
These individuals are Cancans kittens of 2005.
